ON A RECENT visit to Holland I travelled on a commuter train from Amsterdam Airport to the city of Leiden. The train stopped at every village along the route and passenger disembarking walked to the many undercover cycle racks, where sometimes hundreds of bikes were placed, and cycled home. I UNDERSTAND that the West End Road, Haydock bypass (sometimes referred to as the Blackbrook bypass) had been built principally for the benefit of people living on and adjacent to West End Road. How ironic, therefore, that these same people will now have to put up with traffic calming (road humps etc) so as to encourage a flow of traffic along the bypass sufficient to justify the £8.4million spent on it.   more...

There are plastic recycling facilities at Tesco car park and Asda car park, but if you are like me and can only get there once a week to use them it is a pain in the neck to have carrier bags full of plastic bottles cluttering up the house or getting wet left in the garden.   more...
